Archive Question #0054

What is the nucleus of heavy hydrogen

Encyclopedia.com knows the answer. Normal Hydrogen has a proton in the middle (and its electron whizzing around outside but heavy hydrogen has a special nucleus with a proton and a neutron as well. This nucleus makes the type of heavy hydrogen called Deuterium. But that is not all. There is a third type of hydrogen which has TWO (count 'em) neutrons as well as the proton in the middle. this one is caled - you guessed it - Tritium. All of these types of hydrogen behave pretty much like normal hydrogen chemically which means that they normally go around in pairs - H2 gas and they combine with oxygen to make H2O D2O and T2O but, with all those extra neutrons on board the water is heavier than normal water - HEAVY WATER. The big difference is that Deuterium and Tritium are both RADIOACTIVE.
