Archive Question #0065

Dear Agony Elephant, I am doing a project about Burdage Brook and I took some river depth measurements at the top of the river course and at the middle/bottom of it's course. The measurements should make the river deeper further down the course but they do not. Why is this and how can I explain this?

Hi Franchesca,The reason for the differences in depth could be a result of the geology of the area. Further up stream (towards the source) the bed rock may be 'softer' and therefore less resistant to erosion, compared to the bed rock further along its course. Try finding a geological map of the area to find out the nature of the underlying rock!....Hope this helps
