I'm doing a project and need to know as many differences
and similarities between Irish dance music and Scottish dance music.
Anything at all will help whether it's to do with the sounds or
notation. Thanks a lot!
Hi LaurenThis one's not really my expertise I'm
afraid, so I'll have to have a think. Or I can put a mention in
the Musicland newsletter next week asking if any of the subscribers
can be of help... Let me know if you'd like me to do that. Sorry
not to be of more help straightaway
I used to do Irish dancing and I thought I might
be able to help. Irish dancers were different costumes- they where
special dresses with elaborate patterns which sometimes tell a story.
There are many dances that they do but the main ones are Reel, Light
Jigg, Hopp Jigg, Heavy Jigg and Hornpipe. (I think thats most of
them!)The first three are danced in light shoes which are leather
with a thick sole and the other two are done in Hard shoes (think
Riverdance with all the noise). Competitions are called Feis' (pronounced
"feshes")and take place mostly in schools all over the uk. You dance
in age groups and do all the dances I mentioned. You can win a medal
for each dance and you pick what you did best in, in the light dances
and dance that to win a trophy. You do the same for the two heavy
dances. When you go to your first feis you start every dance in
Primary. When you come firts in that dance you move up to intermeidiate
and then when you come first there you move up to open. Well thats
just about all I can remember. Good luck!
